The Rancho Sisquoc Winery has been a favorite for wine club gifts since it first opened in 1977 although winemaking has gone on inside the property for at least 20 years longer and ownership hasn’t changed hands since the land was purchased by James Flood in 1952. Now, over three hundred acres are planted to vines with a very small percentage made into the wineries estate wine program, while the remainder is sold to other local vintners. It’s an unfortunate story, but wine critics almost universally have panned the wineries offerings because they are too balanced, restrained and do not offer enough fruit. It’s an interesting point simply because I personally believe that if these exact wines were compared with old world wines, instead of California wines that they would not only fit in more but that the critics would grant them higher scores.
